Doing the "juried exhibit dance" - which I just invented, since I've never entered, let alone been chosen, for a juried show!! I heard today that The Beauty Myth was just accepted into The Year of the Woman: Exploring the Paths of Women in Northern Colorado exhibit, to be displayed at the Fort Collins Museum in August.
With my painting, I had to turn in a statement, not more than 100 words addressing:
As a woman, what is my role in this community?
When I painted The Beauty Myth, I portrayed my concern with our society's over-emphasis on appearance and on perfecting appearance, and my concern that not enough importance is placed on what's inside a person. An important part of my role in our community is to support my daughters and my friends in seeing their value and their strengths as girls and women, and to help them look past their perceived imperfections. It is a better use of our gifts to improve our spiritual, mental, moral and creative personas than to focus on the negative or improve only our exterior.
